John Barney

John Joseph Barney, Jr., 90, of Salisbury, passed away on Monday, January 12, 2015 at the John B. Parsons Home. Born in Mahanoy City, PA, he was the son of the late John Joseph Barney, Sr. and Mary Ellen Brill Barney. John was a US Army veteran of WWII. He was a tech 4 Cryptographer for General MacArthur’s signal corps in the Pacific. He saw service in Australia, New Guinea, the Philippines and finally Tokyo. He was on a ship in Tokyo Harbor when the surrender was being signed and was part of the first occupation force. He was a member of the VFW, Kiwanis, Salvation Army, Salisbury Rotary Club, Past house chairman of Green Hill Yacht and Country Club and a member of St. Francis de Sales Catholic Church. As part of a great generation, he started from humble beginnings, delivering newspapers as a boy. As a veteran, he got an education in accounting through the GI bill, and was a successful businessman and a caring family man. He became manager of the Coca Cola Bottling plant in Pottsville, Pa. He and his family moved to Salisbury in 1968 where John managed Coca Cola plants in Salisbury, Easton, Maryland and Blytheville, Arkansas. Later in his career he became Comptroller for Wootten Welding Supplies in Salisbury where he retired in 1989. John was an avid gardener, enjoyed traveling, and enjoyed his family in Salisbury and Pennsylvania. He also enjoyed spending summer’s with family and grandchildren at his vacation home in Montego Bay, in Ocean City, Maryland. He had a sense of humor and was kind and generous to his family. John is survived by his daughters, Maria Michele Evans and her husband, Thomas of Salisbury and Michelle Barney Ritch and her husband, Wallace of Fruitland; 4 grandchildren, Nicole Evans and her husband, Joseph Kim of Seaford, Janine Wolford and her husband, Brad of Chester, MD, Sarah Rubin of Sarasota, FL and John Rubin of Glen Burnie; and a great granddaughter, Noelle Kim of Seaford. In addition to his parents, he was also preceded in death by his wife, Mary Nancy Barney in 2006 who was his “pen pal” during the War. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Friday, January 16, 2015 at 11:00 am at St. Francis de Sales Catholic Church in Salisbury with a visitation one hour prior. Interment will follow at Wicomico Memorial Park. Contributions may be made in his memory to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105.
