Mrs. Rebecca Akers Simns

Rebecca Stevens Akers Simns died on January 17, 2015 at the age of 102 after a short illness. She was born in Rock Hall, Maryland on March 16, 1912, the daughter of the late Clarence Huffman Akers and Emily Pearl Stevens Akers. She graduated from Rock Hall High School class of 1929 and then began nursing school. She left nursing school to marry George Clifton Simns in 1930. They resided in Rock Hall where they raised their family. She was a devoted member of the Rock Hall United Methodist Church where she taught Sunday school for over 40 years, sang in the choir and served on the finance committee of the church as treasurer. What she enjoyed most was teaching Sunday School where she developed lasting friendships with many of her students. Mrs. Simns was also a member of the Order of the Eastern Star Chapter 86. A devoted Christian, she never missed an opportunity to share God’s word and she faithfully read the Bible every day. She was preceded in death by her husband of 67 years, George Clifton Simns and all three of her children, Joanne Travis, Larry Simns, and Richard Simns and her sister Clarice Thomas. She is survived by a son-in-law, John Travis, and a daughter-in-law Carolyn Simns; 7 grandchildren, David Ransom and his wife Frances , Stewart Ransom and his wife Janine, Dawn Nordhoff and her husband Richard, Larry Simns, Jr., Robert Simns, Susan Barnhardt and her husband Todd and Richard Carter and his wife Debra; 11 great grandchildren and 8 great, great grandchildren. Funeral services will be held on Tuesday January 20th at 1 PM at Rock Hall United Methodist Church where relatives and friends may call one hour prior to the service. Interment will be aside her husband in Wesley Chapel Cemetery. In lieu of flowers contributions may be made to Rock Hall United Methodist Church.
