James L. McCarty James L. “Jim” McCarty also recognized as McCarthy, of Smyrna DE. Died Saturday, September 19, 2015 in the Compass regional Hospice, Centreville, Md. H e was 84. Jim was born and raised in West Baltimore, Md. and went to St. Martins School. In 1947 he worked a Baltimore Stationary as a delivery boy and stock clerk. He joined the United States Navy in 1950, served 4 years on the Destroyer, U.S.S. Stoddard, DD566, while stationed in Boston, Mass. He married and had five children. He was a licensed plumber for 15 yrs in Mass as well as Baltimore and the Catonsville Md. area. Due to a bad back he made a transition to banking and joined the Provident Savings bank in Baltimore, when he moved to the Eastern Shore of Md. he joined the Chestertown Bank of Maryland as a collection manager and security officer for 221/2 yrs. He retired in 1992and moved to Delaware. While living in Smyrna, he worked for Acme, in numerous stores as a bagger and mostly a cashier. Jim was a 32nd.degree mason as well as a Past District Governor of the International Association of Lions Clubs representing Lions District 22-B. Lion Jim worked to prevent drug usage in the local schools as well as the communities on the Eastern Shore for a number of years. He was awarded numerous citations and awards for his work with the Lions. Jim was recognized by his peers as a Melvin Jones Fellow and a Ralph Helm Fellow as well as a 100% District Governor. He was awarded the International Presidents Medal for his Humanitarian Service to the Association, and was made a Life member of the Delaware Eye Bank as well as Lions International. In addition to his father Thomas John” Mac” McCarty and his stepmother Christine R. McCarty, Jim is also predeceased by a son, James W. McCarthy. He is survived by daughters, Linda Anne Pistone, Deborah Cagnina- Fong and Susan Joan Hennessey and one son, Thomas John McCarty II. 11 Grandchildren and 14 great grandchildren also survive him and his dearest friend Jeanne Giebel. Funeral services will be held on Tuesday September 22, 2015 at 7:30pm in the Fellows Family Funeral Home 370 W. Cypress St. Millington, MD where friends and family may call after 6:30pm Interment will be held privately in Still Pond cemetery.
