Ann Elizabeth Godfrey, 91, of Marydel, Maryland, passed away at the Caroline Rehab and Nursing Center in Denton after a brief illness on August 13, 2018 with family by her side. She was born January 20, 1927 to the late Joseph and Beatrice Smith in Philadelphia, PA. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband G. Milton, her sister Joetta, a son Joseph and two grandsons Kenneth and Stephen, and several brothers and sisters-in-law. She is survived by one brother William G. Smith (Caroline) Clearwater, FL, three sons George Jr. (Sharon) of Greensboro; Gerald (Cathy) of Marydel and Thomas (Martha) of Denton; daughter-in-law Rose Godfrey of Maryland; 16 grandchildren, 16 great grandchildren; and 6 great grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews. Ann grew up in Bridesburg, PA, a small tight-knit community of Philadelphia where she was active in the Bridesburg United Methodist Church. She attended Warren G. Harding School. She moved to Mt. Laurel, NJ upon marrying her husband of 70 years in the fall of 1946. There she was a farm wife and homemaker and raised her 4 sons. In the spring of 1972 she moved with the family to Marydel, MD, where she and Milt operated the family owned vegetable farm, and helped in raising her many grandchildren. After retiring from farming, Ann had a second career working for many years as a receptionist for the Maryland Rural Development Corporation in Greensboro, Maryland, retiring in 2015. She was an active member of the Trinity United Methodist Church in Goldsboro, Maryland for many years. The family is grateful for the many caregivers who helped make her last few weeks comfortable. A funeral service will be held at Fleegle and Helfenbein Funeral Home on Friday, August 17, 2018 at 2:00PM with a visitation one hour prior.
