Elizabeth Hayes Reed (Age 69)
Elizabeth “Betsy” Reed passed away on Wednesday, November 14, 2018, at her home in Silver Spring, MD. She was loving mother to Erin (Charles “Chip”) Edmonds of Williamsport, PA and Nicholas Spiropoulos of Silver Spring, MD; and a rockstar Grammy to Jacob and Luke Edmonds.
Betsy was born on April 12, 1949 in Bellefonte, PA to William K. “Bill” and Elizabeth “Betty” Hutchins Reed. The family moved frequently for her father’s job in the U.S. Airforce and as a result Betsy attended 13 different schools across the United States and Paris, France during her 12 years of grade school. She graduated from Meadville Area High School in Meadville, PA and from Indiana University in Bloomington, IN with a degree in Radio and TV production.
Her greatest love and greatest gift was making music. From her college days as a member of the vocal trio “The Third Chapter,” all the way through singing songs with her grandsons, music sustained her throughout life’s journey. A soprano and a pianist, she shared her gifts widely – both in performing and teaching. For over 25 years she was a beloved piano teacher to students in the Woodside Park neighborhood of Silver Spring. Her students were a constant source of joy and inspiration. For decades she was a fixture in the music ministry program at St. Luke Lutheran Church in Silver Spring. In addition, she mentored students as the musical director in countless youth theatre productions and for several years in the theatre department at Good Counsel High School. She regularly performed as a cantor, choir member and pianist for numerous Roman Catholic churches in the greater DC area including St. Raphael’s Church (Rockville, MD) and St. Paul’s Church (Damascus, MD). The number of weddings and funerals for which she played and sang are too numerous to count — but sharing music with others in the midst of these meaningful times was truly her joy and life’s work.
She was preceded in death by her parents and her younger brother Dan. Survivors in addition to her children and grandchildren include siblings William (Sharon) Reed of TX, David (Michelle) Reed of NY, and sister-in-law Theresa Reed of VT and beloved nieces and nephew. Memorial Service at St. Raphael’s Church, 1513 Dunster Road, Rockville, MD, 20854 on Friday, November 30, 2018 at noon. Private inurnment at a later date in Paris, IL.
In lieu of flowers, Betsy would ask you to keep the music playing.
