Anna Mary (Danahy) Burkey

Anna Mary (Danahy) Burkey, 96, passed away January 23, 2019, at Goodwill Retirement Community, Grantsville, Maryland, into the presence of our Lord God.

Born on October 29, 1922 to Thomas E. and Hazel (Sweitzer) Danahy of Pennsylvania Avenue, Cumberland, Anna was a lifelong, faithful member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church on Oldtown Road, often attending daily Mass as a young child with her father. She graduated from St. Mary’s High School, having completed twelve years of education there, and continued her education at Allegany Hospital on Decatur Street, graduating as a registered nurse.

By her mid-twenties, she was supervisor of nursing in the obstetrics division of Sacred Heart Hospital, and was also responsible for overseeing the Emergency Room of that institution. Being a skilled and compassionate nurse, she was highly regarded by the medical community and her patients alike. She was appointed Director of Nursing at Lions Manor Nursing Home, where she continued to work until her retirement.

Her retirement, however, did not end her endless caring for others, as she continued to lend her medical knowledge and assistance to the residents of Fort Cumberland Arms, where she resided until her illness. Her focus in life had always been on the care and comfort of others, and in particular, to her family.

At the outset of World War II, Anna, along with many of her fellow nurses offered their services to the nursing corps of the United States Army. Finding a heart murmur, she was not accepted for service. The heart, which the Army found deficient, was the wonder of the medical community in her last days, ever seeming abnormally strong. This was not a surprise to her children, however, who knew it to be the best heart ever made.

Ann was married to Sgt. Robert J. Burkey of Cumberland in 1945, upon his retirement from the South Pacific. Their marriage continued for 43 years, until Bob’s death. During their marriage, they enjoyed the love of their three children, numerous family members, and many close friends.

Being a highly devoted daughter, and with the assistance of Bob, she cared for her aging parents in their home until her parents’ deaths. She was deeply devoted to, and dearly loved her sister, Dorothy Minke of Cumberland, and brother, William Danahy of Annapolis, MD, both of whom preceded her in death.

Anna is survived by her children, Patricia Burkey Proudfoot and husband Del, Hudson, OH, Michael Burkey and wife Ann, Cumberland, and Mary Denise Morris, Winchester, VA. She is also survived by five grandchildren, Ann Feichter and husband Michael, Akron, OH, Laura Proudfoot, Massillion, OH, Matthew Morris, Charlotte, NC, Michael Morris, and wife Gina, Baltimore, and Mary Katherine Burkey, Cumberland; five great-grandchildren, Jamie, Julie, and Justin Johnson, Elisabeth and Bryce Feichter, age two, who could bring a smile to his great-grandma’s face when little else could; as well as numerous cousins and wonderful nephews and nieces, including an especially loving niece, Jennifer Minke of Baltimore.

The family extends special thanks to all the wonderful caregivers at Goodwill Mennonite Retirement Center, Garrett County Hospice, special caregiver, Jenny Durst, and hospice provider, Hilda Maust.

Friends and family will be received at the Scarpelli Funeral Home, P.A., 108 Virginia Avenue, Cumberland, on Friday, January 25, 2019, from 7 to 9 p.m. Christian Wake will be conducted at the funeral home on Friday at 9 p.m.

Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at St. Mary’s Catholic Church, 300 E Oldtown Road, Cumberland, on Saturday, January 26, 2019, at 10 a.m. Interment will be in St. Mary’s Cemetery.

The family requests that, in lieu of flowers, memorial gifts be sent to Our Lady of the Mountains Catholic Church Parish, 300 E Oldtown Road, Ste #2, Cumberland, MD 21502; to the Goodwill Mennonite Retirement Home, 891 Dorsey Hotel Road, Grantsville, MD 21536; or to the Garrett County Hospice Center, 203 South 2nd Street, Oakland, MD 21550.
