Cumberland—Rita Ann Davis, 86, of Cumberland, passed away on Tuesday, June 18, 2019, at her home.
Born in Cumberland, MD, on February 20, 1933, she was the adopted daughter of the late Edward and Jeanette (Twigg) Wheeler. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Walter L. “Duke” Davis, Sr.; their infant son, Walter L. Davis, Jr.; grandson, Bryan P. McDermott; sister, Dorothy Taylor; and adopted daughter, Shirley Davis.
Rita was a graduate of Ursuline Academy class of 1951. She was dietary aide at Frostburg Village Nursing Home and Lions Manor Nursing Home. Most of all, she was a devoted wife, mother, and grandmother. Rita was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church Our Lady of the Mountains Parish, past president of the St. Mary’s Catholic Church Sodality, member of the church’s Martha’s Group, member of the St. Mary’s Catholic Church Mother Daughter Dinner Committee. Rita was honored by the church, being named Mother of the Year, the Archdioceses of Baltimore Archdiocese’s Medal of Honor, and the Volunteer of the Year for making Rosaries for the shut-ins, and she was the Chairman of the Angel Tree Committee. Rita was a Eucharistic Minister at the Church, and she was a CCD Instructor. Rita was a member of the Ridgeley American Legion Auxiliary.
Rita is survived by her children, Veronica A. Duckworth and husband Chuckie, Janet L. Davis, Dorothy L. Taylor and husband John, Mary E. Faller and husband Jim, Edward C. Davis, Sr. and wife Mary Ann, and David L. Davis and wife Shawn; adopted children, Charles F. Davis and wife Alice, Sandra K. McKenzie and husband Terry, Judy Duckworth and husband Tommy, and William Davis and wife Vicki; grandchildren, Alton Duckworth, Jr. and wife Crystal, Brian Duckworth and wife Shan, Jessica Litten and husband Jody, Christopher Greise and wife Bobby Sue, Matthew Greise and wife Maiea, Mary Maier, Rita McDermott, Adam McDermott and wife Sarah, John Taylor, Jr., Logan Taylor, Adrienne Faller, Alicia Faller, Amanda Davis, Edward Davis, Jr. and wife Jessica, Caroline Davis, Ashley Davis, and Jerid Davis. Rita is also survived by 27 great-grandchildren, and 4 great-great grandchildren.
Friends will be received at Scarpelli Funeral Home, P.A., 108 Virginia Avenue, Cumberland, on Thursday, June 20, 2019, from 2-4 and 7-9 P.M. The Rosary will be recited at the funeral home on Thursday at 8:45, and the Christian Wake Service will be conducted Thursday at 9 P.M.
Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at St. Mary’s Catholic Church, 300 E Oldtown Road, Cumberland, on Friday, June 21, 2019, at 11 a.m. Interment will be in St. Mary’s Cemetery.
Pallbearers will be her grandsons, Alton Duckworth, Jr., Brian Duckworth, Christopher Greise, Matthew Greise, Edward Davis, Jr., and Jerid Davis. Honorary pallbearers will be grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
