Rawlings—Lois Jean Sluss, 85, of Rawlings, MD, passed away at Moran Manor Nursing Home on Thursday, January 31, 2019.
Born in Frostburg, MD, on February 10, 1933, she was the daughter of the late Mildred (Jenkins) and William Walker. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her son, William Keith Sluss; and grandson, Richard E. Sluss, III.
Lois was a graduate of Beall High School, class of 1951. Following high school, Lois became a wife and mother. After having three children and being out of high school for ten years, she attended Frostburg State University where she received her bachelor’s degree in education. Later, Lois was awarded her master’s degree in public school law, also from Frostburg State University.
Lois was a first grade teacher at South Penn Elementary School for many years. She was a member of the Allegany County Teachers Association and the Maryland State Teachers Association. Lois enjoyed archery, and she was ranked nationally in the competitive sport. In the early 1960’s, she placed second in the first Professional Archery Association’s competition. Lois also enjoyed playing cards, bowling, bingo, and traveling. Most of all, she enjoyed cruises and visiting Europe.
Growing up in Frostburg, Lois attended the Welsh Baptist Church in Frostburg, MD. Later, she attend the Christian Fellowship Church in Cresaptown.
She is survived by husband of 67 years, Richard E. Sluss, Sr.; children, Richard E. Sluss, Jr., Keyser, WV, Kathy J. Lust and husband Bernard, Columbia, and Matthew D. Sluss, Petersburg, VA; grandchildren, Brandi Y. Taylor and husband Scott, California, and Zachary B. Lust, Florida. Lois is also survived by two great-grandchildren.
Friends will be received at the Scarpelli Funeral Home, P.A., 15205 McMullen Hwy SW, Cresaptown, on Monday, February 4, 2019, from 4-7 P.M. Funeral services will be conducted at the funeral home on Tuesday, February 5, 2019, at 11 A.M. with Pastor Gary Gordon officiating. Friends will be received one hour prior to the service. Burial will be in Frostburg Memorial Park.
