PITTSBURGH – William Gilmore Umstot, 99, of Pittsburgh, formerly of Cumberland, MD, passed away on January 22, 2019, at UPMC-Presbyterian.
Born on May 15, 1919, in Cumberland, he was the son of the late Clarence Daniel “Pat” and Ruth May (House) Umstot. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Elinor M. (Robinson) Umstot in 1992.
William was one of the last surviving members of the class of 1937 of Fort Hill High School, its first graduating class. On August 16, 1940, he married his wife, Elinor, and together they enjoyed a remarkable, loving relationship that was an example to be followed. William served his country in World War II from 1943-45, serving as Staff Sergeant Third U.S. Army, Provost Marshall Section. In 2010, he was able to return to Europe to retrace the route of the Third Army, under Gen. George Patton, from Normandy to Germany. He most enjoyed Paris!
He worked as an independent grocer with his father; in banking at Cumberland Savings Bank, now First United Bank & Trust; and as a cost analyst at the Allegany Ballistics Laboratory, an R&D facility of Hercules Powder Co., now part of Orbital ATK.
An involved member of the community and volunteer, William was a member of the following organizations: Queen City Lodge #131 AF & AM, Cumberland Consistory Scottish Rite, Ali Ghan Shrine (for whose Drum & Bugle Corp he had learned to play the snare drum), McKinley Chapter #12 Order of the Easter Star (Past Patron), American Legion Fort Cumberland Post #13, and the Veterans of Foreign Wars.
Left to cherish his memory are his daughters, Nancy L. Umstot Barry and husband Robert, Pittsburgh, Ruth Elinor Umstot Lewis and husband J. Michael, Corbin, KY, and Rebecca “Becki” Umstot Vasse and husband Alan, Sykesville, MD; grandchildren, Jessica Bromall Sparkman and husband Britton, Los Angeles, CA, David R. Bromall and wife Lindsay, Denver, CO, Michele A. Barry and wife Emily N. Twaddell, Boston, MA, Lori A. Barry-Smith and husband Christopher, Boston, MA, Barbara Barry Arbogast and husband Christopher, Reno, NV, Christopher M. Lewis and wife Amy, Lexington, KY, Sara Lewis Harris and husband Michael, Leesburg, GA, Stephen Vasse and wife Angel, Lebanon, OH, Christina Vasse Manley and husband Michael, Finksburg, MD, and Christopher Vasse, Hampstead, MD; great-grandchildren, Madolyn Lyric Sparkman, Christopher Sacca, Elizabeth Barry, Katherine Barry, Kiley Barry-Smith, Tyler R. Barry, Ian T. Barry, Zachary Arbogast, Katrina Arbogast, Sydney Lewis, Jaxon Lewis, Carly Harris, Cooper Harris, Crosby Harris, Evan Vasse, Elizabeth Vasse, Julia Vasse, Katherine Manley, and John Manley.
Family and friends will be received at the Scarpelli Funeral Home, P.A., 108 Virginia Avenue, Cumberland, on Sunday, January 27, 2019, from 2 to 6 p.m. A Masonic service will be conducted at the funeral home at 5:30 p.m. by Queen City Lodge #131 AF & AM.
Funeral services will be conducted at the funeral home on Monday, January 28, 2019, at 11 a.m. with The Reverend Jonathon Jensen officiating. Interment will be in Hillcrest Burial Park. Military honors will be accorded by members of the Fort Cumberland Post 13 Honor Guard.
The family has requested that, in lieu of flowers, memorial contributions be sent to either the: Fort Hill Scholarship Fund Designated for the Welcome Home Award, c/o Fort Hill High School, 500 Greenway Avenue, Cumberland, MD 21502; or to Calvary Episcopal Church, 315 Shady Avenue, Pittsburgh, PA 15206.
